Blissen – DIY Natural Deodorant Recipe

Today I’m going to show you how to make an all natural and effective deodorant. Keep in mind that this is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant.  What that means is that it does not contain the chemicals that are used in antiperspirant which actually prevent you from sweating.

You are supposed to sweat!  It’s the body’s way of cooling off and getting rid of toxins.  I would much rather sweat a little than use aluminum containing antiperspirants.  Some studies have suggested that exposure to aluminum can increase your risk of certain types of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

That being said, this is a deodorant, and you will still sweat.  The purpose of the ingredients I’m using in this recipe is to absorb the moisture when you do sweat as well as neutralize any odors that would normally occur from sweating.

To absorb moisture, I use natural ingredients that are so safe they are edible.  The first is organic arrowroot powder.  The second is baking soda.  Both are great for absorbing moisture.  You may have also heard of using baking soda to neutralize odor.  Some people put an open box in the fridge to absorb odor.  I’ve also heard of people sprinkling it in their stinky tennis shoes.  Well, as if that wasn’t enough fun, we’re going to put it on our armpits today!

The magic ingredient in this deodorant is probiotic capsules.  You may think this is a strange thing to put in deodorant, but it’s actually pretty cool.  Now if you’re not as much of a science geek as I am, you might not know that probiotics are used to increase the beneficial bacteria in our bodies.

Did you know that when we sweat, it’s not the sweat itself that smells?  It’s actually bacteria that makes the stink.  Well, by introducing the healthy bacteria from probiotics, we can create an environment that encourages these healthy bacteria to overpower the normal odor causing bacteria. In theory this should minimize the odor caused by underarm sweating.

Now keep in mind that I have not done any official armpit sniffing experiments to prove this theory, but I do know that if I forget to wear my homemade deodorant I can definitely smell the difference by the end of the day.

That being said, let’s begin our recipe for the day.  I like to make up a few of these at a time, since I go through them fairly quickly, but you can divide the recipe if you like.  The ingredients you will need for this batch of deodorant are:

1/4 cup beeswax

1/4 cup cocoa butter

1/3 cup coconut oil

2 tablespoons baking soda

1/2 cup arrowroot powder

vitamin E oil

15 drops orange essential oil

6 capsules of shelf stable probiotics – I really like Dr. Mercola’s Complete Probiotics

First we will melt together our wax, cocoa butter and oil.  I have these all ready measured out and will just dump them together in a glass measuring cup.  I’m going to melt these using a double boiler.  This creates a water bath around my ingredients, so they melt slow and gentle and do not burn.  Just be certain to keep water out of the measuring cup.  This is an oil based product without chemical preservatives, so we need to keep it free of water.

While I let this melt, I’m going to mix my powdered ingredients.  Here I have the baking soda, arrowroot powder and probiotics capsules.  I already opened the other 5 capsules, but I want to show you how you can do this because it can be a little tricky.  You need to get the actual probiotic powder out of the capsules before you mix it in.  If you’ve never looked at one of these, look close, and you’ll see that there are 2 separate ends that overlap in the middle.  The trick is to gently pull these 2 pieces apart.  The best way I’ve found to do this is to carefully twist the 2 pieces in opposite directions, then gently pull one away while twisting.

Once you have the top off, you can tap the powdered probiotics into your powder mix.  Go ahead and give this a stir, and it will be ready to add to the melted ingredients.  It looks like the wax still needs some more time to melt, so I’ll let that go, and I’ll be back when it’s ready….

I’m back.  It looks like our wax and cocoa butter have completely melted, and we’re ready to add our powdered ingredients.  Let’s take this off the heat and just tap in the powders.  Mix it up good, so there’s no clumps.  Now I can add a few drops of vitamin E oil and the 15 drops of orange essential oil.

The essential oil is completely optional, but I love how it smells mixed with the cocoa butter.  Did you ever have one of those boxes of chocolates with an orange filled chocolate?  That’s what it reminds me of, yummy!  I’m quite certain that this will not taste as good, so don’t go telling anyone to lick it off you.  Ew, gross mental image, sorry.

Once you have it all mixed up nice and smooth, you can pour it into your deodorant containers.  I found these on amazon.  Once they’re poured just let them sit either on the counter or in the fridge until they are cooled.  After they’re cooled you can put the lid on. You can keep the one you’re using in the bathroom and store the other 2 in the fridge.  You probably don’t have to, but I like to just to keep them fresh longer.

Something to keep in mind is that this contains coconut oil which is solid at room temperature, but it starts to melt around 76 degrees Fahrenheit.   If your house is normally 76 degrees or warmer, you may need to keep it in the fridge because it will get a little soft.  It won’t completely melt because of the hard beeswax, but it will soften.

And that is how you make your own all natural and effective deodorant.  For more recipes and tips on natural skin care and cosmetics, or to purchase already made products, feel free to visit www.blissennaturals.com.  If you enjoyed this video today, please like on youtube and share with your friends on social media.  Thanks so much for watching!
